Who moved my cheese?, written by Dr Spencer Johnson, is a simple story that reveals profound truths. It is quick and easy to read, in fact can take less than an hour, but is something that stays with you. Cheese is whatever makes you happy, whether that’s a career, family, personal relationships or health. The story asks, how do we cope with change? How do we find what we want again, when it has moved?
The maze is where you look for what you want. It can be a scary place or a place of adventure depending on how you look at it. The story teaches you how to anticipate change, adapt to change quickly, enjoy change and be ready to change quickly, again and again.
I enjoyed the story, but didn’t really need to read the preamble and discussion afterward. Some say the story is so simple it insults their intelligence, but I think its simplicity is its strength. It allows you to interpret it as you wish. The cheese is whatever you want it to be. It allows you to create a mental image that you can use as a positive motivation whenever you feel that what you want is elusive or limited in supply.
