Diane Ashmore has more than one string to her bow. She likes to write and make handmade objects, such as cards, boxes and envelopes. Most of her work is made with paper, fabric and paints and she uses a mixture of new and re-used materials.
Diane worked for many years as a non-fiction editor and still provides freelance editorial services, such as copy-editing and proofreading, to publishers.

Diane,
Can you be more ‘specific’ and tell me what the proportions are for whiting to rabbit glue in the making of gesso? The ratio is important and this is something you have failed to resolve.

The advice I was given when I bought the whiting was non-specific. To quote from the instructions: ‘There is no fixed rule about the proportion of size to whiting. Add the whiting dry, pouring it into the warmed rabbit skin size until a small island appears on the surface.’
I suggest when you buy materials for making gesso that you follow any instructions that come with it or ask for advice from the art store.
